In Loving Memory of Michael A. Benson 1964 – 2025 “A life of service is a life well lived, and in the quiet moments, he found his greatest peace.” Michael A. Benson, 61, of Bourbonnais, Illinois, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, surrounded by his girlfriend and his children. Although a sudden illness in August came as an unexpected challenge for his family, the months that followed were filled with reconnection, reflection, and final moments with those he loved most. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Michael was the son of Robert F. (A Civil Engineer) and Margaret L. Benson (Jewelry Story Owner). He grew up in Cullom, Illinois, where he attended Tri Point High School before answering his call to serve. In 1987, he joined the United States Army, beginning what would become a lifelong path in the medical field. A career defined by precision, skill, and a genuine gift for caring for patients. Michael proudly served his country and continued his service to humanity long after his military career concluded. He went on to work as a surgical technologist, earning numerous awards and commendations for his exceptional work ethic, steady hands, and the compassionate care he provided to countless patients. He set a standard of excellence that inspired his colleagues and left a lasting impact on the many lives he helped heal, often returning them to their families with renewed hope. Although extraordinarily skilled in the operating room, Michael’s talents extended far beyond his profession. He possessed a beautiful singing voice that lit up any room during karaoke nights. Thankfully, he didn’t pursue a singing career, or the medical field would have lost a most gifted healer. His artistry and attention to detail were also reflected in his taxidermy work, where his respect for nature and craftsmanship shined through. In the later years of his life, Michael found profound happiness in simplicity, peace, and nature. His loving partner, Sandra (Sandy) Hubert, fondly recalls his contentment sitting on the backyard swing with his loyal dog, Cora, by his side, quietly reflecting and observing the calm of nature. Micheal was not a man of man words, often described as quiet, but he was a man who appreciated the simple things in life. He cherished time spent cooking, fishing, golfing, playing pool, singing, and sharing laughter with family and friends. He especially loved fishing and creating memories with those who knew him. Michael was a man who lived in the moment, embraced life fully, in both big and simple things. Those who knew him remember him as humble, strong, thoughtful, and skilled at whatever he put his mind to. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret (Skinner) Benson, and his sister, Pamela Hartwig. He leaves behind his three beloved children: Joshua (Jessica) Benson, Matthew (Maria) Benson, and Heidi (Kody) Schott; his cherished grandchildren: Alexis, Ella, Laila, Colton, Cora, Brock, Ryan, and Kole. He is also survived by his loving partner, (Sandra) Sandy Hubert; his brother, Robert Benson; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory close. A memorial visitation will be held Wednesday, November 12th, from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Hack-Jensen Funeral Home, 753 Hodges Street, Beecher, IL 60401. Michael will be laid to rest with military honors at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Rd, Elwood, IL 60421, in private ceremony, later with family and close friends. Michael’s life was a gift, and his legacy an enduring and impressive branch added to his family tree. His memory and accomplishments will continue to be passed down and shared to inspire the generations that follow him.
